The qualifications required to become a driver consist of four basic requirements that apply to almost all types of driver vacancies in Indonesia. These requirements are minimum age in line with driving license (SIM) regulations, possession of an active SIM that matches the vehicle type, physical and mental health proven by a doctor’s letter, and complete identity documents.

The minimum age requirement to become a driver is determined by the type of SIM needed for the position, ranging from 17 to 21 years old. In addition to SIM and age, logistics companies add operational requirements such as minimum driving experience, ownership of a smartphone, and an active bank account as additional conditions.

 

What minimum qualifications are needed?

The minimum qualifications to become a driver in Indonesia consist of four basic standards. These standards are age, health, driving competence, and valid identity documents as the four basic eligibility pillars that every driver must meet before they can legally operate a vehicle on public roads in Indonesia.

  • Minimum age according to SIM category: Applicants must meet the minimum age limits set in Article 25 of Police Regulation No. 9 of 2021, namely 17 years for SIM A and SIM C, 20 years for SIM B1 and SIM A Umum, 21 years for SIM B2, 22 years for SIM B1 Umum, and 23 years for SIM B2 Umum.
  • Proper physical and mental health condition: Every prospective SIM holder must undergo a health examination (Rikkes) that includes a vision test with a minimum of 6/12 with lens correction, a hearing test for normal conversational sound, blood pressure measurement, physical examination of the limbs, and a color blindness test using the Ishihara book.
  • Basic driving skills and knowledge: Every SIM applicant must pass a theory test on traffic regulations, road signs, and safe driving procedures, followed by a simulation test and a practical on-road driving test.
  • Ownership of valid identity documents: Applicants must have a valid Identity Card (KTP) as proof of citizenship and domicile. In addition to KTP, permanent employee driver positions generally require an active bank account for salary payments, while platforms such as Deliveree require an active smartphone to access the application and receive orders.

Applicants who have met all of these basic qualifications have a sufficient foundation to apply for entry-level driver positions and proceed to the next selection stages.

 

Is formal education required?

Formal education is not a mandatory requirement for all driver positions in Indonesia. However, most logistics and transportation companies still list at least a senior high school (SMA) or vocational high school (SMK) diploma or equivalent as an administrative requirement in the application process.

Deliveree does not require a diploma in the partner driver registration process, because selection is based on completeness of vehicle documents, the status of the driving license (SIM), and passing in‑app training. On the other hand, executive driver and personal driver positions for director or CEO level not only request a senior high school diploma, but also require experience serving senior executives and a clean track record.

 

What licenses and documents are required for drivers?

The licenses and documents required for drivers in Indonesia are divided into two main categories. Drivers need a total of seven types of documents, grouped by function and the nature of their legal obligation. The first category consists of legally mandatory documents regulated directly by law. The second category consists of additional documents required by the company where the driver works.

Legally mandatory documents number only two. Violations for not carrying a driving license (SIM) are subject to a maximum fine of Rp 1,000,000, and violations for not carrying a vehicle registration certificate (STNK) are subject to a maximum fine of Rp 500,000 under Articles 281 and 288 of the Road Traffic and Transport Law (UU LLAJ).

For commercial freight drivers, document requirements extend into the realm of business licensing. Public freight vehicles must have a yellow-plate STNK, a valid KIR (periodic motor vehicle inspection), and a Supervision Card (Kartu Pengawasan) from the Department of Transportation as proof of official operational authorization on the road. Drivers transporting hazardous and toxic materials (B3) or fuel are required to have special recommendations from relevant agencies such as the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) for B3, obtained through applying for a special freight transport permit to the Ministry of Transportation.

 

What documents must drivers prepare?

The documents that drivers must prepare include personal identity documents, driving licenses, vehicle documents, and additional supporting documents that vary according to the position type and employer.

  • Valid Identity Card (KTP): The main identity document that is mandatory for all types of driver applications without exception, both for permanent employee positions and partner platform registrations. The original KTP and its photocopy are both required as proof of the applicant’s official identity and domicile.
  • Active Driving License (SIM) matching vehicle type: The most important technical document in a driver application because it directly proves driving legality and competence. Deliveree requires SIM A for car, XL car, van, pickup, and small box drivers, SIM B1 for double engkel, CDD long, and fuso, and SIM B2 for tronton. The SIM must be valid, because an expired SIM cannot be used to register or operate.
  • Valid Vehicle Registration Certificate (STNK): Serves as proof that the vehicle to be used is legally registered and meets the requirements to operate on public roads. For Deliveree drivers, the vehicle’s STNK is a mandatory vehicle document that must be uploaded during the registration process.
  • Police Clearance Certificate (SKCK): Used by logistics companies as proof of the applicant’s record, ensuring that drivers who will handle high-value goods do not have a criminal history. SKCK is issued by the Indonesian National Police (Polri), is valid for 6 months, and can be applied for online via the official skck.polri.go.id website.
  • Physical and mental health certificate: This letter is issued by doctors appointed by the police or via the e‑Rikkes and e‑Ppsi applications, proving that the applicant is fit to drive a vehicle from both physical and psychological aspects.
  • Active bank account: A bank account in the applicant’s name is required for salary payment in permanent employee positions. For Deliveree partners, accepted accounts are BCA, BCA Digital, BRI, BNI, or BSI in the driver’s name, and this document must be completed before the driver account can be activated.
  • Tax Identification Number (NPWP): NPWP is mandatory for vendor drivers and optional for Deliveree drivers, but national-scale logistics companies generally require NPWP as part of payroll administration.

Applicants who prepare all of these documents before registering will pass administrative selection faster because they do not need to go back and complete files in the middle of the process. Expired documents, especially SIM and SKCK, are the most common reasons for driver applications being rejected at the early stage, so renewing these two documents before applying is a step that must be prioritized.

 

Is a professional license always required?

Professional licenses are not always required, because the need for a “Umum” category SIM as a professional license depends directly on whether the vehicle being driven is used for commercial purposes involving the transport of passengers or goods for the public. Drivers of private vehicles or partner drivers on delivery platforms such as Deliveree only need an individual SIM (SIM A, B1, or B2) as long as the vehicle operated is not a public or commercial yellow-plate vehicle.

Professional licensing becomes mandatory when the type of driver job shifts into the realm of commercial public transport. According to Article 77 paragraph 1 of Law No. 22 of 2009, the Road Traffic and Transport Law distinguishes between two groups of driving licenses: individual motor vehicle SIM and public motor vehicle SIM, and every driver is required to use the SIM category that matches the operational type of their vehicle. Online taxi drivers, commercial online ojek drivers, intercity bus drivers, and commercial logistics truck drivers must hold a public SIM (SIM Umum) according to their category. SIM A Umum applies to vehicles under 3,500 kg, SIM B1 Umum to vehicles over 3,500 kg without trailers, and SIM B2 Umum to articulated vehicles.

 

What skills are essential for a driving career?

The skills that are essential for a driving career consist of two equally important groups. The first group is technical hard skills that can be learned and tested directly. The second group is soft skills that determine the consistency of a driver’s performance in the field from day to day.

Technical hard skills include direct technical abilities related to vehicle operation and route management, such as the ability to drive and maintain the vehicle. Deliveree drivers also need to master app navigation, real-time order status management, and brief communication with customers through the in‑app chat feature.

 

What technical skills do drivers need?

The technical skills required for professional drivers in Indonesia cover three main competency groups as defined in the Indonesian National Work Competency Standards (SKKNI) for freight transport issued by the Ministry of Manpower (Kemnaker). These three groups are vehicle control, road safety, and basic maintenance knowledge.

  • Vehicle control: Includes the ability to drive vehicles according to their class and weight, including smooth acceleration techniques, controlled braking, and maneuvering in tight spaces. Drivers operating heavy vehicles such as tronton and trailers must also master anticipatory or defensive driving techniques as recognized in SKKNI competency unit H.494250.016.01.
  • Road safety: Includes a deep understanding of traffic signs, speed limits according to road conditions, procedures for handling critical situations during trips, and safety protocols when loading and unloading goods. Deliveree drivers are required to comply with speed limits and applicable safety protocols on every route as part of partner operational standards.
  • Basic vehicle maintenance: Includes the ability to perform pre-trip inspections covering engine oil checks, tire pressure, vehicle lights, and braking systems before the vehicle departs. Drivers who can detect early signs of damage before leaving the pool minimize the risk of breakdowns on the road that could cancel orders and increase emergency repair costs.

Drivers who sharpen these three skills and complement them with BNSP certification gain access to logistics driver positions with above-market-average salaries and more stable job security.

 

What challenges do drivers face at work?

The most common challenge drivers face at work is traffic congestion, followed by bad weather, damaged roads, and the lack of proper rest areas along national logistics routes. Congestion in major Indonesian cities not only hinders on-time deliveries but also increases psychological pressure on drivers who are targeted by companies to complete a certain number of deliveries in a single shift.

 

What common challenges do drivers encounter daily?

The common challenges drivers face every day arise from traffic congestion, physical and mental fatigue, delivery deadline pressure, and recurring road safety risks. Congestion lengthens working hours, long hours trigger fatigue, and fatigue increases accident risk, so one challenge directly worsens the others.

  • Traffic congestion: Reduces driver productivity directly and is unavoidable, especially in major cities. Congestion on the Jakarta–Cikampek toll route causes travel time losses of Rp 1,907,353 per hour and large-vehicle operating costs of Rp 50,799 per km. Drivers operating heavy vehicles on this route bear these operational losses every day.
  • Physical and mental fatigue: Scientifically proven as a direct cause of performance decline and accidents. Fatigue leads to poor concentration, slower reactions, and reduced alertness, all of which increase the probability of fatal errors on the road.
  • Delivery deadline pressure: Comes from the Service Level Agreement (SLA) standards set by shippers and logistics platforms for drivers. SLAs in logistics define delivery time limits that drivers must meet, and failure to meet them can reduce partner ratings, lower order assignment priority, or trigger claims from shippers. Drivers stuck in traffic do not have full control over punctuality, but still bear the consequences of resulting delays.
  • Road safety risks: Inherent to the driving profession and cannot be completely eliminated even when driving skills are high. The National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) recorded that 80 percent of freight transport accidents in 2024 were caused by driver fatigue.

Drivers who build regular rest routines, use real-time navigation features to avoid congestion hotspots, and join platforms that provide active insurance protection such as Deliveree are in a much better position to manage these four challenges than drivers who work without adequate support systems.

 

Are long working hours common?
